[Glossary + References.]

[Gray.] = [May 1979 - Early 1980s] Known Members:
Jean-Michel Basquiat
(founder / bell / synthesizer / clarinet / poems)
Nick Taylor (guitar)
Vincent Gallo (bass)
Felice Rossen (occasionally played bass)
Michael Holman (drums)
Wayne Richard Clifford aka Justin Time
Shannon Dawson (trumpet)
Notes:
Also known as Channel 9 & Test Pattern
According to Vincent Gallo they
never recorded any studio material. Although guitarist Nick Taylor would later
record a track titled "Suicide Hotline" based on an experiment Wayne
Clifford and Basquiat once did at home with prank calls to a suicide hotline and
Basquiat's cryptic phrasing looped on tape. This may be the closest thing to a
recorded example of Gray that exists right now. A soundtrack to Glenn O'Brien's
New York Beat Film ("Downtown 81") is being advertised as containing a
live Gray recording, however, this has yet to materialize. Gray was a live
experimental art-noise band that performed at Max's, CBGB's, Hurrahs, and a
famous one at the Mudd Club.
Some song titles from their live
sets:
La Dopa
Industrial Mind
Origin of Cotton
Popeye
Braille Teeth
Six Months
The Rent
Drum Mode
Mona Lisa
